Lectio: Mt 6.1-6, 16-18
Meditatio: “[But] take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them, otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.” Mt 6.1
Oratio: "O God, You call us periodically to reform our lives and You want us to do so for Your glory and for our benefit.
I remember Jesus urged his followers to pray, fast and give alms - but they were to do so without seeking public acclaim but only for You to know.
Grant that I may use the coming season of Lent to continually do these ascetical practices but in a way that is pleasing to You.
I ask this of You, who lives and reigns with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.
Amen.”
Contemplatio: Keep silence and remain in recollection for a few minutes.
Operatio: Reflect on a what I will do this Lent. Be sure to include the ascetical practices in my routine. Resolve to do carry out my Lenten program in a way that is known to God alone.

Meditatio: “Knowing their hypocrisy (Pharisees and Herodians) he said to them, ‘Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at’.” Mk 12.15
Oratio: "O God, how patient You are in dealing with us even when our dealings with You leave a lot to be desired.
I remember when the Pharisees and Herodians tried to trap Jesus with a trick question, He responded in a way that utterly amazed them.
Grant that when people irritate me for whatever reason, that I may imitate Jesus and always respond patiently and in a positive manner.
I ask this of You, who lives and reigns with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.
Amen.”
Contemplatio: Keep silence and remain in recollection for a few minutes.
Operatio: Reflect on a time when someone irritated me with their question - How did I act? How should I have acted if I were imitating Jesus? Pray for the patience of Job and the compassion of Jesus in dealing with others.

Meditatio: “He had one other to send, a beloved Son. He sent him at last thinking, ‘They will respect my son’.” Mk 12.6
Oratio: "O God, You are so patient with us even we are obstinate.
I remember Jesus told a parable about the religious leaders of Israel’s failure to produce the fruits You wanted from them and yet You continued to send prophets to them and finally sent Your Son.
Grant that I may always be open to Your words found in Sacred Scripture or proclaimed by Your church so that I may be part of the good foundation for Your kingdom here on earth.
I ask this of You, who lives and reigns with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.
Amen.”

Operatio: Reflect on how well I have responded to God’s call to reform - with Lent starting Wednesday, resolve to make use of the ascetical pratices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving part of my response so that my lent may produce for You the kind of fruit that you deserve and which will last.

Oratio: "O God, You have provided us with a true way to our heavenly home - Jesus’ way. I remember Jesus said in His sermon on the mount that it is only those who do Your will will enter the kingdom.
Grant that I may always imitate Your Son and put His words into practice for there ate no short-cuts to heaven.
I ask this of You, who lives and reigns with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.
Amen.”

Meditatio: “So they [the priests, scribes and the elders] said to Jesus in reply, ‘We do not know.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things’.” Mk 11. 33
Oratio: "O God, You want us to honest and forthright - and what consequences we suffer when we are not.
I remember when the religious leaders were asked by Jesus by what authority John baptized, they copped a plea and said that did not know. Jesus then told them He would not tell them by what authority He did his things - and the religious leaders because of their dishonesty missed out on being enlightened of the Messiah, the very purpose of their ministry.
Grant that I may always remember the proverb, ‘Honesty is the best policy’ and live by it.
I ask this of You, who lives and reigns with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.
Amen.”

Operatio: Reflect on my relationships with others - Am I honest in my dealings or am I devious? If the latter, in what circumstances? Resolve to be ever mindful of this tendency and resolve and pray each day to act by being forthright in those circumstances.

Oratio: "O God, above all you desire we show mercy and forgive others. I remember Jesus made it a condition when we pray for our needs, that we first forgive those for whom we have a grievance. He then went on and made it clear that a heart full of mercy and faith will receive what he/she prays for.
Grant that I may always be merciful as You are merciful.
I ask this of You, who lives and reigns with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.
Amen.”

Oratio: "O God, for You, greatness lies in service.
I remember Jesus told His disciples that His mission was to serve and to give His very life - for our salvation.
Grant that I may seek greatness through serving others and giving of myself for them.
I ask this of You, who lives and reigns with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever.
Amen.”

Operatio: Reflect on how well I am doing in seeking greatness in the pattern of Jesus? The standard is so simple, the doing is so contrary to our nature.
